One Lonely Dragon

One Lonely Dragon, Magic and Tough

Once I yearned to be magic and tough,
But I was left to wonder what my status is,
Though life’s a stage to strut my stuff,
I knew I’d never make it in show biz.

I was the wall flower, intense and shy,
Entering from stage left, or was it right?
Left out of the popular group, the other guy,
For everything I got, I had to fight.

So I became a dragon from medieval days,
You knew I was there.  I had a mighty roar,
But dragons are the ones who everyone slays,
If I wasn’t careful, I’d be doomed forevermore.

I could be in a crowded room, invisible to all,
Pretending that I’d asked someone to dance,
Yet even then my courage would hit the wall,
For lonely dragons only get one chance.

There must be a lady dragon waiting somewhere,
Although time drags on and it’s getting late,
I’m still invisible and no one can find me here,
I’m breathing fire and I don’t want to wait.

And the days drag on, and the nights grow cold,
I still remain a dragon, but just on the inside,
Watching the modern knights who are so bold,
While I sit steaming in my tough old hide.

Me, Love, Eva, and one Identified Male

Eva said she would be waiting if I came by her house,

She was there on the porch, wearing jeans and a blouse,
Looking casual with her pants tucked into her boots,
Over one shoulder was draped her swimming suit,
Although I wondered about that, I still had my smirk,
I was excited and impatient, just off of work,
We had talked about swimming at our last dance,
What we would do also if we got the chance,
Our bodies said a thousand things without talking,
As we floated across the floor, barely walking,
I felt that sexual itch as she moved with sinuous grace,
Although my steps quickened, Eva kept up with my pace,
I did not want the dance to stop, or to ever let her go,
But she returned to her partner, despite her fevered glow,
If only she had been with me we’d never have to part,
She was a breath of fresh air, into my lonely heart,
She bumped into me once as she went to fix her hair,
And in my pocket I discovered a note she had placed there,
Eva’s phone number, her address, a place we could meet,
All the important things so we could later greet,
When I called we soon became fast friends,
We were soul-mates, sharing even the latest trends,
We had much in common, but I wondered about her man,
“I can’t tell him yet,” she said, “Please try to understand,
I want to be with you,” she paused, “but he’ll never set me free,
I’m not sure just what he’ll do, but he’ll never let you have me,”
Such ominous words Eva said and then cried that night,
But fearing to love is like fearing to breathe, “I’m ready to fight,
You are the one I want,” I said hoarsely, “But tonight,
I want to love you, kiss you, and make you truly mine,”
“See me tomorrow,” she said, “when you first get off work,
I know a place we can be alone, and no one else can lurk,”
We would talk by the river, with the moon as our guard,
Lock up our common sense, and then our clothes discard,
Turn our imaginations loose and let our love run free,
We would love until the morrow, under the tall oak tree,

Now I could see her waiting but pacing back and forth,
I was coming from the south but she kept glancing north,
In front of her yard a car came to a slow stop,
She stared but there was no time to move or drop,
I saw a gun appear and then the sudden flash,
A window shattered, another one suddenly crashed,
I couldn’t just wait until the man had emptied his gun,
Love sparks courage, to me the war had just begun,
I aimed my car, pushed the pedal, and felt a satisfying crash,
I was going for the gun but into me someone did smash,
The police arrived a little too late for this important date,
Quickly I was on the ground, handcuffed, ready for my fate,
A SWAT team had been two streets over, finishing up a drug raid,
They were not in a mood to listen, their minds already made,
I was out of control, according to what the police had seen,
Then Eva arrived and saw me, and tried to explain the scene,
The three of us were taken downtown to sort out this mess,
Trying to determine who was wrong, at first was anybody’s guess,
Gradually reports came in from detectives who verified her tale,
Finally I was out, but also released was one identified male,
In the custody of his lawyer, who was as crooked as a dog’s hind leg,
The lawyer knew judges and got what he wanted without having to beg,
But I had been touched by love, for me it was a permanent bond,
I went back to Eva’s house, wanting her, needing her to respond,
I knocked once, twice, but she refused to open the door,
“I love you, I truly do,” she said loudly, “but I think I love him more,
I know he’s a little misguided, but he loves me just the same,
He wouldn’t have missed if he didn’t love me, to him it’s just a game.”
Confused and disheartened, I could no longer be part of this strife,
I was still in love with Eva, but I had to get on with my life,
Part of my heart belongs to her, but I’m alive to tell this tale,
The two of us couldn’t fit in her heart, me and one identified male.

Fear

The oldest and strongest emotion is fear,
So I’ll release any phobia and not hold it dear,
I cringe when I think of letting fear run loose,
Stirring up trouble with adrenaline’s juice,
I know love makes the world go round,
While anxiety shuts those feelings down,
Love opens windows so the sun can shine,
Fear brings little deaths that kill the mind,
Hope brings a sparkle to weary eyes,
Fear douses dreams with untold lies,
Caution could keep me from places I could go,
Keeping me from trying what I know,
My sensitive heart has fears as well,
Letting phobias within it dwell,
For fears enter dreams and claim the throne,
Gliding in silently when confidence is gone,
Jealousy and distrust also climb aboard,
Wrecking havoc with love and cutting the cord,
Sweaty palms and a racing heart set the stage,
My fears overcome me, slowing creativity on every page,
Howling and snapping, fear continues to grow,
Until confronted, stared down, and commanded to go,
Apprehension is hesitant on life’s long ride,
And runs when courage stands by my side,
I may risk it all and not complete a task,
But I’ll try my best, that’s all I’ll ask,
With courage running over I’ll free my mind,
And leave fears in the dust, far behind,
My future is unveiled for me to see,
No web of fear to hinder me,
I’ll step forward and let nothing block my way,
Facing the world bravely, day by day.

You Are Unique!

You are Unique
You are unique, I’ve told you many times,
I want to convince you that destiny awaits,
And at a certain moment you will be there,
When destiny flings open your special gates,
Allow yourself to think and dream,
Run with the wind and feel its power,
Use every precious moment in your grasp,
Life is too swift to waste even one hour,
Voices may tell you to keep both feet on the ground,
Don’t listen! you don’t have to be planted yet,
Keep dreaming and feeling, listening and seeing,
And the expectations of others try to forget,
Don’t do what you’ve been told you have to do,
Absorb from the stars their creativity and light,
You don’t have to be someone’s clone,
Be an individual, you have the obligation and right,
If you give up your goals too soon, my friend,
Your growth will be stunted and you’ll not touch the sky,
You’ll forget the commitment you made to yourself,
You will lose value in your own mind’s eye,
It takes courage to walk where others fear to go,
Pain and hurt are necessary for you to grow,
Mistakes are just steps to reach a higher plain,
Keep reaching and trying, you’ve everything to gain.

One Lonely Rose

One Lonely Rose
One lonely rose greeted me,
I didn’t know why she left our home,
Beneath my window this morn,
It was not logical to be in the world alone,
She tugged her petals closer,
She always forgot to bring her coat and mitts,
While shivering in the storm,
If she needed warmth she wouldn’t admit it,
Her head drooped slightly,
I could tell she was tired and ill,
As she leaned into the rain,
I knew she struggled paying bills,
Against the winds, the mighty winds,
But she had to prove she had the will,
She was determined to remain,
She made it clear I was unneeded still,
Expecting the worst when all had ceased,
Surely after months my love she would lack,
I hesitated before I glanced outside,
Her world must be out of whack!
The delicate rose remained there still,
She did not want me to bring her back,
Bursting with fragrant pride,
Her pride will be her downfall,
I admired her courage as she stood alone,
She had heard freedom’s call,
Smiling as she stood sentinel tall,
She had no intention of giving in, none at all,
Knowing the other roses were gone,
Even to lose love she chose not to bend,
She waited bravely to face the first snowfall.
She would be independent until the end.

Sometimes in poetry the story is between the lines.
